چکیده
In I Z patients with idiopathic liaciiiocliroiiiatosis aiid varying dcgrces of iroii ovcrload the scru~ii fcrritin coiicctitratioii was rclatcd to the aiiiouiit of iron mobilizcd by vciicsectioit. Tlicrc was 110 corrclation Lctwceii iron loadaiidcliclatablc iron. In 35 patients with normal iron storcs following vciic~cctioii therapy, both transfcrrin iron and cliclatablc iron was pathologically increased. The initial stagcs of iron accumulation in idiopathic liac~iiocliromatosis arc cliaractcrizcd by an iinbalance bctwccii cliclatablc iron and fcrritiii, a plicnonicnon that could explain tlic pathogenesis of tlic discasc.

Relationship between serum ferritin and total body iron stores in idiopathic haemochromatosis.
The relationship between the serum ferritin concentration and total body iron stores was investigated in 41 patients with idiopathic haemochromatosis and 199 first or second degree relatives. Thirty-two relatives (16.1%) had increased iron stores and serum ferritin levels were increased in all but one of them. The false-positive rate in the relatives with normal iron stores was 1.8% compared wi...
متن کاملIron absorption in normal subjects and patients with idiopathic haemochromatosis: relationship with serum ferritin concentration.
In 52 normal subjects there was an inverse relationship between serum ferritin concentration and iron absorption. In 21 measurements in 15 patients with idiopathic haemochromatosis there was a similar inverse relationship but absorption was higher in relation to iron stores at all levels. Haemochromatotic patients with normal serum ferritin levels had abnormally high values for desferrioxamine ...
متن کاملErythrocyte ferritin content in idiopathic haemochromatosis and alcoholic liver disease with iron overload.
The erythrocyte ferritin content was measured in patients with either idiopathic haemochromatosis or alcoholic liver disease and iron overload to define its value as a marker for an excess of tissue iron. The mean erythrocyte ferritin content in patients with untreated idiopathic haemochromatosis was increased 60-fold and fell with phlebotomy. After phlebotomy many patients had an increased red...
متن کاملIron chelation in haematomas at fracture sites.
Previous work suggested that during the catabolism of haemoglobin a physico-chemical form of iron was released which was more readily chelatable by desferrioxamine than normal storage forms, as ferritin-haemosiderin. Desferrioxamine chelation was therefore investigated in five patients with major fractures in which haemoglobin catabolism is greatly enhanced by the red cell destruction which pro...
متن کاملHereditary haemochromatosis.
Haemochromatosis should currently refer to hereditary iron overload disorders presenting with a definite and common phenotype characterised by normal erythropoiesis, increased transferrin saturation and ferritin and primarily parenchymal iron deposition related to innate low (but normally regulated) production of the hepatic peptide hormone hepcidin. Since the discovery of the haemochromatosis ...
